The Good Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church was organized on April 24, 1958 with Rev. Haley H. James as Pastor, and eighteen charter members. Church services were held in the Veterans Memorial Building until Dec. 15, 1958, when the Old Farragut School on Tennessee Street, was purchased from the Vallejo Unified School District. The church grew and prospered under Rev. James’ leadership until 1962. Rev . F. K. Simon of Wichita, Kansas was then called to pastor on March 18, 1963. Under his leadership “Circles” were introduced to the Missionary Dept. with the purpose of doing mission work in the church, community and abroad. Rev. Calvin Miller of Vallejo, was called as Pastor on October 15, 1964. Through his teachings, vision and direction, Good Samaritan successfully purchased the building we now occupy, 407 Capitol St., Vallejo, on November 15, 1966. The first worship service was held on January 1, 1967, with Rev. M. T. Thompson, Pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Berkeley, preaching the dedication sermon. On July 10, 1969 , Rev. V. J. Under his leadership, many souls were added to the church and the addition of ministries; Deaconess Council, Brotherhood, radio broadcast on Station KNBA. Lawhorn home on December 17, 1979. The church was without a pastor until October 19, 1980, when Rev. Dr. M. D. Slade, of Marina, CA was called as Pastor. Under Pastor Slade’s leadership “ God has done great things for us”. The mortgage was burned on February 7, 1982. A new roof was constructed, the sanctuary refurbished with new lighting, carpeting, heating, baptismal pool, air-conditioning and stained glass windows. Brotherhood, Youth Steppers, WIA (Women in Action) and the 4th Quarter Generation (Young Adults) were organized. Property adjacent to the church was purchased and converted into an additional parking lot. A new Men’s Restroom was added to the main floor. The Men’s Ministry (formerly the Brotherhood), was reorganized. The Church website was created. Community Outreach Missions sponsored by the Church are: USDA Food Distribution, Emergency Food Assistance, Clothing Give-away, Annual Community Thanksgiving Day Feast, Annual Christmas Basket Giveaway, Foreign Mission Support (Haiti). Pastor M.D. Slade retired on December 13, 2020. The church was without a pastor until Rev A.W. Briscoe of Chicago, IL was installed as Pastor on October 24, 2021. The Church will continue to teach, and preach, proclaiming the uncompromised Word of God, with the goal of reaching as many souls as possible.
